BATES VOLLEYBALL CLAIMS CBB TITLE WITH 3-1 WIN AT COLBY

WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Bates College volleyball team (22-5, No. 4 in New England) extended its winning streak against teams from Maine to 26 in a row tonight with a 3-1 win over CBB rival Colby College (13-15) in Waterville.

The Bobcats, who have not lost to a Maine school since Nov. 1, 1997, jumped out to a 7-0 lead in Game One of the match before cruising to a 15-6 victory. Colby looked to take momentum in Game Two, opening with an 8-0 lead, but the Bobcats answered by cutting the lead to 8-7 before pulling out a 15-13 win. The White Mules picked up a win in Game Three, 15-5, and looked to send the match to a fifth game when they took an 11-5 lead in Game Four, but Bates rallied behind a big hit from senior Mandy Webb (E. Greenbush, N.Y.) and finished the match with a 16-14 win the final game.

Bates was led by rookie middle hitter Liz Wanless (Belleville, Ill.), NESCAC's leading hitter, who had 13 kills in 33 attempts. Wanless averages four kills per game for the Bobcats.
