SWIMMING AND DIVING SPLITS WITH WESLEYAN

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College swimming and diving teams split with Wesleyan University today. The women defeated the Cardinals, 137-100, while the men lost by 11 points, 127-116.

The women led the entire afternoon, after taking the top two spots in the 200-yard medley relay. The Bobcats' got multiple wins from sophomore Gudrun Mirick (Chaska, Minn.), who captured the 200- and 100-yard freestyle events. The Bobcats also got a big performance in the 200-yard backstroke, as first-year swimmers Megan Simmons (Buffalo, N.Y.) and Carissa Gottleib (Seattle, Wash.) took the top two spots.

The men's meet was neck-and-neck much of the afternoon, with the Bobcats with four points until the 200 backstroke, when the Cardinals took first second and fourth places. First-year diver Andrew hastings (Weston, Mass.) swept both the one- and the three-meter diving, the only multiple winner for the men, while sophomore David Blaney (Bar Harbor, Maine) and junior tri-captain Paul Urbanczyk (Washington, D.C.) took the top two spots in the 50 freestyle.

The women move to 2-0 on the season, while the men drop to 1-1.
