BATES SWIMMING AND DIVING SWEEPS BOWDOIN
Men Capture Third Straight CBB title, Women Earn Three-Way Tie

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept the Bowdoin College Polar Bears this evening, earning an outright share of the Colby-Bates-Bowdoin (CBB) conference title for the men and a three-way tie for the women.

The men's meet was never in doubt, as the Bobcats won eight of the 12 events, taking the top two spots in five events for the 140-94 victory. First year diver Andrew Hastings (Weston, Mass.) was Bates' only multiple winner, taking the three-meter with a score of 259.15 and the one-meter with a 243.00 tally. The Bobcats took the top two spots in the 50-yard freestyle when junior Paul Urbanczyk (Washington, D.C) and sophomore Paul Blaney (Bar Harbor) swam a dead heat of 23.03 seconds.

The Bates women jumped out quickly, taking the top two spots in the 200-yard medley relay, establishing a 15-2 lead. Bowdoin closed the scoring to four points, 58-54, by sweeping the top three spots in one meter diving, but the Bobcats answered by taking the top three in the next event, the 100-yard butterfly, led by sophomore Pamela Murchie (Westbrook). The Bobcats led, 102-86, headed into the final three events. Bowdoin took three of the top four spots in three-meter diving to close the lead to 107-100, and swept the top three in the 100-year breaststroke, establishing the Polar Bears' first lead of the meet, 116-110, headed into the final event. The Bobcats responded, taking the 200-yard freestyle relay's first and third position to clinch the 123-120 win.

Both Bates teams finish the dual meet season with a 7-3 records. For the men, it is their highest win total since 1985-86 and their third-consecutive CBB title. The women post their highest win total since 1995-96.
