BATES SWIMMING FALLS TO MIDDLEBURY

LEWISTON, Maine — The Bates College swimming and diving teams suffered their first loss of the season to a Division III opponent today, falling to NESCAC rival Middlebury. The Panthers took the men's meet, 173-125, and won 178-122 on the women's side.

Men: Middlebury 173, Bates125

Junior distance freestylist David Bear (Winter Park, Fla.) was the Bobcats' top performer for the men. He took the 500-yard freestyle in 4:57.12 and the 1,000 in 10:12.98. Bates' best performance in a single race came in the 50 free. Sophomore Todd Bretl (Barrington, R.I.) won the event from lane seven, while senior Steve Imig (Denver, Colo.) took second and rookie Chris Guerette (Manchester, N.H.) came in fourth. Senior Dan Heneghan (Windsor Locks, Conn.) took the 200 butterfly in 2:10.84, while first-year Sao Hseng (Rangoon, Burma) won the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.44. Senior diver Andrew Hastings (Weston, Mass.) split the diving events, meeting the NCAA championships qualifying mark for the third time this season on the one-meter board with a score of 273.55 and beating defending national champion Derek Chicarilli, who won the three-meters earlier, in the process.

Women: Middlebury 178, Bates 122

The Bates women had four swimmers who won two events. Rookie diver Kara Seaton (Wayne, Pa.) remained undefeated in dual meets this season, capturing the three-meter event with a Tarbell Pool and Bates College record performance of 252.45. She won the one-meter event with a score of 222.05. Classmate Vanessa Williamson (Auburn, Maine) was impressive in the butterfly races, taking the 200 in 2:09.17, a time that would have won the men's race, and the 100 in 1:00.41. Junior captain Megan Ferrari (Doylestown, Pa.) took the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events, while rookie Nicole Sparks (New Canaan, Conn.) rounded out the multiple winners by taking the 50- and 200-yard freestyle.
