BATES SWIMMING AND DIVING FALLS TO MIDDLEBURY

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College swimming and diving teams were unable to complete a perfect weekend, dropping two decisions to Middlebury today. In a tightly contested match between the women, the Panthers prevailed, 168.5-129.5. The men's meet was more lopsided, with Middlebury earning a 183-92 victory.

Bates led after seven events by winning six of them, including junior Gudrun Mirick (Chaska, Minn.) in the 50- and 200-freestyle and first-year Jill Kopicki (Edison, N.J.) in the 1000-free and 200-butterfly. Middlebury took the top three spots in the 100-yard freestyle, erasing a 10-point deficit. The Panthers were able to hold Bates off despite another win by Kopicki in the 500-free and a Bates record by first-year Megan Ferrari (Doylestown, Pa.) in the 200-breaststroke. Her time of 2:31.16 gave Ferrari her second breaststroke record in as many days.

In the men's meet, the Bobcats' lone event win came from first-year swimmer David Bear (Winter Park, Fla.) in the 500-yard freestyle. Panther swimmers set Tarbell Pool records in the 200-yard medley relay and the 100-yard butterfly.
