The Bates Football team fell to the Middlebury Panthers 28-23, losing their closest game since their 26-26 tie versus Amherst in 1991.
The Bobcats scored on their first drive, capped by a two yard run by Steve Potamis. Middlebury scored the next two touchdowns with a 19-yard reception from quarterback Scott Pokrywa to Todd Brandenburger and a 27-yard run by halfback Brad Gottfred to gi
ve the Panthers a 14-7 first quarter lead. The Bobcats began the second quarter with a 22-yard field goal by first-year student Wes Matthews. Both teams scored second quarter touchdowns. Bates sophomore running back P.J. McGrail scored on an eight yard
run. On the day, McGrail had 147 yards on 26 carries, the highest rushing total for a Bates player since the tie with Amherst. The halftime score was 21-16 in favor of Middlebury.
After a scoreless third quarter, Middlebury scored early in the fourth quarter to extend their lead to 28-16. Bates clawed back with an 18-yard touchdown strike from junior quarterback Dan Hooley (15-32, 166 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT) to junior wideout Tom Spir
o (5 catches, 60 yds, 1 TD) on fourth down with 6:18 remaining. The Bobcats got the ball back twice in the last three minutes, but could not score, as time ran out with the ball on the Panther 45-yard line.

The Bates Women's Soccer Team convincingly beat St. Joseph's, 9-1, but fell to Connecticut College 2-1. Against St. Joe's, Breck Smith (7 goals, 2 assists, 16 points on the season) and Tracy Meyer (4-0-8) both notched two goals for the Bobcats. First-ye
ar student Colleen McCrave (4-6-14) also had an impressive showing with 1 goal and 3 assists. The Bobcats offense was well distributed with seven players collecting goals.
Against Connecticut College, the offense turned from hot to cold with the Bobcats losing 2-1. The Camels scored two goals in the first half to take the lead for good. Smith scored the only goal of the second half for the Bobcats. Bobcat goalie Shan

The Women's Cross Country finished an impressive 5th out of 12 Division III teams in the Open New England's held at Franklin Park, Boston. The Bobcats' Adelia Myrick was among the top finishers, placing 16th with a time of 18:46, good for third among Div
ision III competitors . She was just a minute behind the first place finisher.

10/28 @ NESCAC Meet at Connecticut College (m & w)
The Bobcats started the week on a slow note, falling to St. Joseph's, 12-15, 11-15, 15-2, 15-8, 12-15 in a tightly fought match played in Windham. In that match, junior Sarah Bennett had seven service aces, but it wasn't enough.
On Saturday and Sunday, the Bobcats travelled to participate in the Mount Holyoke Invitational. They finished 2-1 in round robin play, defeating Mills 15-10, 15-7 and Tufts 15-12, 17-15, before falling to Smith 5-15, 11-5. In the two victories, senior co
-captain Colleen Matlen registered a total of 17 kills. The Bobcats qualified for the first round of playoffs, but fell short, losing to Amherst, 3-15, 7-15.

The Bates Field Hockey Team had a convincing win over St. Joseph's, 5-1, but fell to Connecticut College 1-0. Against St. Joe's, Robyn Neill (2-0-4) had two goals for the Bobcats. Amanda Schall (5-2-12), Shilo Hutchins (1-2-4) and Jessica Klein (1-1-2)
also scored in the Bobcats' highest scoring game of the season. Against Connecticut College, the two teams played to a scoreless tie in the first half. The Camels scored what proved to be the winning goal midway through the second half. Bobcat goalie
Wendy Zimmerman had an impressive showing with 15 saves. The Bobcats are now 7-5 on the season.

The Bates Men's Soccer team dropped to 4-6-2 with two losses against Bowdoin and Connecticut College. The Bobcats lost a tough overtime game to Bowdoin, 1-0. Against Connecticut College, Breck Taber (2-4-8) scored the lone Bates goal in the first half
. But the Camels rallied in the second half to score two goals and take the win, 2-1. Connecticut College improved its winning streak to eight games.

The Bates Women's Tennis team competed in the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament, held at UMass-Amherst on Saturday. Sophomore Emily Kleinman was the only Bates player to advance to the second round, though the rest of the team played w
ell in the face of tough NESCAC competition from Bowdoin, Colby and Williams.
