Bates 6, Bowdoin 4

The Bates College softball team (6-5) won its sixth straight home game by defeating the University of Southern Maine (22-14-1), 6-4, marking the first time the Bobcats have defeated the Huskies since 1990.

Senior centerfielder Brandi Richards (Kingfield, Maine) led the way for the Bobcats, going 2-3 with 3 RBI and a double. Sophomore RF Katie Marshall was 2-3 with a walk and three runs scored from the leadoff spot. First-year pitcher Jen Crawford (Southborough, Mass.) scattered 10 hits, but walked just two batters and retired 10 of the last 12 hitters she faced to raise her record to 3-2.

Sophomore CF Julie Plant (Gorham, Maine) was 2-2 with two walks, two stolen bases and a double for the Huskies. Senior pitcher Paula Reed (Rockland, Maine) allowed just four hits, but made two costly errors in the decisive fifth inning, when the Bobcats rallied to score three runs.
