Bowdoin 7-12, Bates 4-8

(Taken from a Bowdoin College press release)Bowdoin College first-year pitcher Julie Jussaume (E. Douglas, Mass.) pitched a complete game victory in the Polar Bears 7-4 victory over Bates in the first game of a doubleheader, and then came on in relief in the second game with a 7-3 deficit and helped Bowdoin rally for a 12-8 victory. It is the first time Bowdoin (3-10) has swept a doubleheader in two years.

In the first game, Annie Pinkert (Highland Park, Ill.) went 4-for-4 with an RBI and Kristen Marshall (Danvers, Mass.) added two more RBI as the Polar Bears built a 5-2 lead after four innings and cruised to the 7-4 victory. Jussaume allowed eight hits and just one earned run in seven innings to pick up the victory.

Marci Brandenburg (Atlanta, Ga.) started the second game on the mound for Bowdoin, scattering three hits in the first three innings and allowing the Polar Bears to build a 3-1 lead. Bates (0-3) opened the fourth inning with three straight hits, including an RBI double by Abbey DeRocker (Queensbury, N.Y.) that sparked a six run inning for the Bobcats and a 7-3 advantage.

Jussaume came in and closed the door, allowing just four more hits and one more run in the final three frames. Meanwhile, the Bowdoin bats were getting hot, led by a five-hit, five-RBI performance by Megan McHugo (Norwich, Vt.). The Polar Bears plated two runs in the fourth, three more in the fifth and put the game away in the bottom of the sixth with four more runs, capped by a two-run double by McHugo.

First-year Erin McDonough (So. Portland, Maine) was the table-setter for Bowdoin in the twinbill, reaching base in seven of her eight appearances, scoring six runs and stealing three bases. DeRocker had four hits, two RBI and a run scored in two games for the Bobcats while Emily Morningstar (W. Newton, Mass.) added five hits.
