BATES SOFTBALL SWEEPS HUSSON TO EXTEND WINNING STREAK TO SIX

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College softball team (6-3) swept its third straight doubleheader today with a pair of wins over Husson College (9-19). The Bobcats won, 6-5 in 10 innings in game 1, and 8-4 in a contest called after five and a half innings because of darkness.

In game one, the Bobcats scored first on the first on a two-run triple by senior pitcher Becki Gasior (Park Ridge, N.J.). Gasior picked up another RBI on three straight Bates singles with two out in the third inning. Husson responded in the fifth inning taking advantage of a Bates error and a timely double by sophomore Angela Brawn (Lincoln, Maine) to take a 4-3 lead, which stood up until the bottom of the seventh, when junior Shannon Browher (Laconia, N.H.) tied things up with a sacrifice fly. Husson answered in the top of the eighth, as junior 1B Kelly A Dow (Calais, Maine) walked, moved to third on an error and scored on a passed ball. The Bobcats got the run right back in the bottom of the eighth on a leadoff home run by sophomore 3B Laura Lent (Clinton, Mass.), her fourth of the season. After a scoreless ninth, the Braves were unable to advance the courtesy runner from second in the top of the 10th, opening the door for Bates. Lent led off by sacrificing senior Emily Morningstar (W. Newton, Mass.) to third and senior Abbey DeRocker (Queensbury, N.Y.) drove her home with a sacrifice fly for the 6-5 victory. Gasior, who pitched all 10 innings and struck out seven Husson batters, also had a 3-4 day at the plate with 3 RBI and the triple. The Braves were victims of 15 runners stranded on base.

In game two, despite a 2-3 performance from Husson's Kelly E. Dow (Sebec Village, Maine), including a triple, a two-run home run and three RBI, the Bates offense was more potent, with five players driving runs. Browher was 3-4 with a double and a run scored, while sophomore Anna Wulffleff (Wilton, Conn.) was 2-3 with two RBI and a run scored. First-year SS Whitney Hamill (Watertown, Conn.) was 2-3 with two RBI. Junior pitcher Jen Crawford (Southborough, Mass.) went the distance, scattering 10 hits while allowing just three earned runs.
