BOWDOIN SWEEPS CBB OPENER, 11-1 AND 7-6, OVER BATES

LEWISTON, Maine -- In the Colby-Bates-Bowdoin (CBB) conference openers for both teams, the Bowdoin College Polar Bears (9-5) swept a doubleheader from the Bates College Bobcats (0-3), 11-1 in the opener and 7-6 in the second game.

In the first game, the Bobcats could not get any offense going against Bowdoin first-year pitcher Jessie Poulin (Hampden), who allowed just three Bobcat hits in five innings of work. Bowdoin sophomore Erin McDonough (So. Portland) had a pair of two-run singles, while junior Emily Grenier (Lewiston) had a three-run double in the fourth inning, as the Polar Bears batted around in both the third and fourth.

In the second game, Bowdoin jumped out to a 6-0 lead after four innings, highlighted by a pair of RBI doubles by first-year Kristie Miller (No. Canaan, Conn.). Bates responded, scoring twice in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run, two-out single by sophomore Anna Wulffleff (Wilton, Conn.). First-year catcher Kim Bosse (Auburn, Maine) scored on an error in the fifth, while classmate Whitney Hamill (Watertown, Conn.) cleared the bases with a 3-run triple in the bottom of the sixth to even the score, 6-6. The Polar Bears responded in the top of the seventh, when first-year Emily Rizza (Pennington, N.J.) ripped a two-out single down the third-base line, scoring sophomore catcher Megan Wardrop (Concord, N.H.) from third, to provide the winning margin.

With the sweep, Bowdoin has exceeded its win total from all of last season. Bates will go for coach Gwen Lexow's first collegiate win against Daniel Webster College on April 7.
