BATES SEES SIX-GAME WINNING STREAK HALTED BY BOWDOIN

(Taken from a Bowdoin College press release) BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College softball team swept a doubleheader from Bates College on Tuesday afternoon to give it a school-record 15 wins on the season, eclipsing the former mark of 14 set in 1986. The Polar Bears rode a one-hit shutout by Gina Laugelli (Long Branch, N.J.) for a 1-0 win in game one before using the long ball to cruise to a 10-2 triumph in the nightcap.

Laugelli and Bates hurler Becki Gasior (Park Ridge, N.J.) pitched five innings of scoreless softball in game one until the Polar Bears got to Gasior in the sixth. Kristie Miller (North Canaan, Conn.) walked, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Kristen Marshall (Danvers, Mass.) for the only run of the game. Laugelli allowed just a third-inning single to Abbey DeRocker (Queensbury, N.Y.) to pick up her second shutout of the season.

In game two, Bowdoin put the game away early as Emily Rizza (Pennington, N.J.) led off the game with a rocket over the leftfield fence before Miller hit a long shot into the rightfield stands two batters later. Rizza delivered an two-RBI double in the second as the Polar Bears built a 5-0 lead that would never be threatened. Miller added an insurance run with a bomb to straight-away center in the fifth. Julie Jussaume (E. Douglas, Mass.) pitched five innings to pick up the win (6-4) while Jen Crawford (Southborough, Mass.) took the loss (3-2).
