SOFTBALL DROPS ONE-RUN GAMES TO WILLIAMS

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Bates College softball team (1-10) dropped a pair of NESCAC inter-division contests against Williams (8-8) today, 3-2 in the opener and 4-3 in the second contest.

After Williams opened the scoring in Game 1 with an RBI double by SS Jessica Hartley, Bates responded with two runs in the top of the third. Junior LF carla Flaherty (Gorham, Maine) led off with a triple and scored on a Williams error on a ball hit by starting pitcher Krissie Whiting (Contoocook, N.H.), who reached second. Whiting advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a bunt by senior 2B Sarah Huffman (Ipswich, Mass.) Williams scored the tying and winning runs in the fourth on a single by senior 2B Gisele Pinck, Hartley's second double of the game and a triple by rookie Kerri McMahon. Whiting, who suffered the loss for Bates, allowed eight hits in six innings, walking one and striking out one. She also had two hits at the plate.

In game two, the Ephs scored one run in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth, highlighted by a bases-loaded RBI double by 1B Katherine Baldwin. In their final at bat of the game, the Bobcats nearly rallied to tie the contest. Rookie SS Lindsay Mayock (No. Conway, N.H.) singled and moved to second on a error to lead off the inning. Mayock scored on another error with classmate Erin Foye (New London, Conn.) at the plate. Foye then scored on the second triple of the day by Flaherty, who came home with the third run on a wild pitch. With the bases clear, the Bobcats were unable to restart the rally. Junior Ginger Walsh (Hopkinton, N.H.) suffered the loss, allowing six hits and four runs in six innings, striking out two and walking one.
