COLBY SOFTBALL TAKES CBB TWINBILL

WATERVILLE, Maine — The Bates College softball team was unable to take a contest in the 2002 CBB series, dropping a pair today to the Colby College White Mules, 4-1 and 1-0.

Colby (12-9-2, 2-2 NESCAC East) won first game on the strenght of a fine pitching effort from Annette Caswell '03, who picked up the complet-game win by allowing five hits and striking out five. Bobcat junior Ginger Walsh (Hopkinton, N.H.) took the loss for the Bobcats, giving up just one earned run on five hits in three and two-thirds innings. Offensively Colby was led by Kate Hurd '05 and Meaghan Shea '04 who each had two hits, and Kim Chadwick '02 who had the lone RBI for the Mules. Bates (5-24, 1-5 NESCAC East) scored its run in the top of the first when junior CF Krissie Whiting (Contoocook, N.H.) walked, moved to second on sophomore Cami Dyson's (Arvada, Colo.) single and scored on an error.

The second game was a pitchers duel between Colby's Toni-Lynn Robbins and Bates rookie Sarah Klenakis (Springfield, Mass.). Klenakis pitched six strong innings, allowing seven hits, but just one unearned runwhile striking out four. She eight Colby runners in six innings. Colby's Robbins was even stronger going the distance, limiting the Bobcat line-up to three hits and one walk with three strikeouts. Kim Chadwick batted 1-3 and scored the games only run, and Shannon Emerson '03 went 2-3 with a stolen base. The Bates offense got doubles from rookie SS Lindsay Mayock (No. Conway, N.H.) and sophomore RF Sarah Levine (Leeds, Mass.), but the Bobcats could not capitalize.
