BATES SOFTBALL SWEEPS WESLEYAN
Whiting One-Hitter Extends Wins Streak to Four

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — The Bates College softball team swept a doubleheader for the second time in three days today as the Bobcats downed host Wesleyan University, 5-2 and 6-0.

The Bobcats (7-8) fell behind in the first game on an RBI double by Wesleyan's Debra Ellen Glickstein in the second inning. Bates answered with in the top of the fourth inning when rookie Cami Dyson (Arvada, Colo.) smacked an RBI double of her own and scored on a single by sophomore 1B Carla Flaherty (Gorham, Maine) to take the lead for good. The Bobcats added three insurance runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by a run-scoring double from rookie Sarah Levine (Leeds, Mass.). Sophomore pitcher Ginger Walsh (Hopkinton, N.H.) improved to 2-5 with the victory, while Wesleyan's Lindsay Wasserman suffered the loss.

In Game Two, sophomore pitcher Krissie Whiting (Contoocook, NH) was the story for the Bobcat. She allowed just one hit in seven innings of work, facing just two batters over the minimum and picking up her second career shutout. She did not allow a ball out of the infield over the first four innings, but Wesleyan (4-9) got their only hit from Melissa Courtemanche to lead off the fifth inning. Whiting retired eight more hitters in a row before Courtemanche reached on an error. Bates got all the offense it needed in the first inning on a hit, a walk, a hit batter and three straight RBI grounders. Senior SS Laura Lent (Clinton, Mass.) had three hits and scored twice, while Levine also added a pair of hits.
