BATES SOFTBALL OPENS NEW FIELD WITH SWEEP OF UMF

LEWISTON, Maine — In the first contests of the season on the new Lafayette Street Field, the Bates College softball team (11-12) swept a pair of games from the visiting University of Maine-Farmington Beavers (14-6), 8-7 in the opener and 8-3 in the nightcap.

In game one, Bates scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to post a come-from-behind win. UMF had broken a 4-4 tie in the top of the sixth inning with three unearned runs, highlighted by an RBI double to centerfield by Richelle Dube (Lewiston, Maine) that gave the Beavers a 7-4 lead. With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the seventh, Bates sophomore 1B Carla Flaherty (Gorham, Maine) ripped an RBI single that cut the lead to 7-5, while senior SS Laura Lent (Clinton, Mass.) scored as the relay throw got past the catcher. With runners on second and third, rookie 3B Amanda Beck (Pleasantville, N.Y.) singled to right off UMF reliever Heather Marden (Parsonfield, Maine) to drive in the winning runs. Bates sophomore Ginger Walsh (Hopkinton, N.H.) picked her fourth win of the season, while Marden fell to 8-2.

The Beavers took a 1-0 lead on an RBI groundout by sophomore 3B Sarah Topham (Saco, Maine) in the top of the second of game two. Bates answered on rookie RF Sarah Levine's (Leeds, Mass.) RBI single in the bottom of the inning. The Bobcats exploded for six runs in the bottom of the third as rookie C Cami Dyson (Arvada, Colo.) ripped a two-run double to right-center field. Five batters later, Levine deposited Marden's 2-0 pitch over the left field fence for Bates' first home run of the season, a three-run blast. Levine ended the day going 3-5 with six RBI. Bates hurler Krissie Whiting (Contoocook, NH) went the distance for her sixth win of the season, while Marden dropped to 8-3 with her second loss of the day.
