BATES SOFTBALL DROPS NESCAC EAST OPENERS TO TUFTS

MEDFORD, Mass. (taken from a Tufts University press release) — The host Tufts University Jumbos hit four home runs while sweeping a double-header from Bates College, 7-1 and 5-1, in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East Division softball action on Saturday afternoon.

The Jumbos went deep three times in the first game. Junior 1B Tiffany Trahan (Chelmsford, Mass.) hit a solo shot with one out in the third. Sophomore LF Jenica Spogen (Chehalis, Wash.) clouted a three-run bomb later in the inning to give Tufts a 6-0 lead. Senior CF Randee McArdle (East Nassau, N.Y.) added a solo blast in the fifth. Junior P Jodie Moreau (Clarksburg, Mass.) went the distance for her fifth win, allowing just four hits and no walks while striking out seven. Bates scored its lone run in the sixth when senior pinch-hitter Jen Googins (Portland, Maine) hit a one-out single, sophomore LF Krissie Whiting (Contoocook, N.H.) followed with a single, and junior 2B Sarah Huffman (Ipswich, Mass.) added another single to drive home the run.

Bates took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of Game Two, thanks to a two-out double by senior SS Laura Lent (Clinton, Mass.) and a run-scoring single by freshman C Cami Dyson (Arvada, Colo.).Trahan's second home run of the day gave the Jumbos a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first, giving senior P Rachel Brecher (Newington, Conn.) all the offense she would need, as she allowed just one run on six hits with seven strike outs to earn the victory. Spogen squeezed home McArdle, who doubled, in the third. Sophomore C Lis Drake (Chelmsford, Mass.) also singled home a run in the fourth. For the Bobcats, Lent went 3 for 3 in the second game and was 4 for 6 in the twinbill. For the Jumbos, Trahan was 3-7 with five runs batted in for the day, while Spogen was 3-6 with 4 RBIs.
