Salisbury State Seagull Invitational BATES SOFTBALL SPLITS ON SECOND DAY OF SALISBURY, Md. The Bates College softball team (3-6) were on both ends of a shutout in a pair of games on the second day of the Seagull Invitational at Salisbury State University. In their third contest of the tournament, the Bobcats dropped a 5-0 decision to Cabrini (Pa.). The Bobcats managed just one hit in six innings against Cavalier starter Megan Johnston. Sophomore Ginger Walsh (Hopkinton, N.H.) allowed just two runs over the first five innings, but a Cabrini three-spot in the sixth inning helped ice the game. Bates picked up its first win of the tournament, 2-0, over Wesley (Del.), behind a fine all-around performance from sophomore Krissie Whiting (Contoocook, N.H.) Whiting struck out five Wolverines and walked none, while allowing just five hits. She worked out of a bases-loaded no-out jam in the third inning by snaring a line drive hit back to the mound and then inducing a 4-3 line drive double play. Whiting also provided a key hit in the third inning, when she led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Sarah Huffman (Ipswich, Mass.). Huffman scored the Bobcats' first run of the game in the first inning, when she singled, stole second, advanced to third on a single by senior captain Laura Lent (Clinton, Mass.) and scored on a double steal.
