BATES SOFTBALL DROPS TWO AT SALISBURY STATE TOURNAMENT

SALISBURY, Md. — The Bates College softball team (2-5) dropped a pair of games on the opening day of the Seagull Invitational hosted by Salisbury State University today.

In the first game, the Bobcats fell to Moravian (Pa.), 8-0. First-year pitcher Vicki Clark (Milton, Mass.) held the Greyhounds (7-2) to just four hits through the first six innings, but suffered the loss as a result of three Moravian home runs. Bates had two hits in the game, while Moravian was boosted by three home runs, the big blow coming on a three-run shot in the top of the fifth by Jessica Esposito.

The second game of the day was much closer, as the Bobcats dropped a 2-1 decision to Wilkes (Pa.) College. Sophomore Ginger Walsh (Hopkinton, N.H.) had another fine pitching performance allowing just four hits overall, two over the first five innings. Rookie Cami Dyson (Arvada, Colo.) recorded her first career multi-hit game, going 2-3 and reaching base in four of six plate appearances on the afternoon. Wilkes (3-3) took the victory in the bottom of the sixth inning when winning pitcher Alice Fink beat out a double play ball as the Colonels' second run crossed the plate.
