WALTHAM, Mass. — The Bates College softball team picked up its first doubleheader sweep of the 2001 season, outscoring the host Brandeis University Judges by a combined 21-7 score in Waltham, Mass. today.

The Bobcats (5-8) jumped out to a 7-0 lead after 2 1/2 innings in the first game, taking advantage of wildness from Brandeis (6-7) hurler Leigh Warren to score three runs in the first inning. Bates added four more runs in the third inning, with senior Anna Wulffleff (Wilton, Conn.) hitting a two-run double. Sophomore Ginger Walsh (Hopkinton, N.H.) struck out a career-high five batters to snap her personal five-game losing streak.

In Game Two, the Bobcats jumpde out to an 8-1 lead, with rookie catcher Cami Dyson (Arvada, Colo.) driving in two runs in the first with a two-run double and two more in the fourth inning with a one-out single. Sophomore hurler Krissie Whiting (Contoocook, N.H.) had a big second game as well, going 4-5 with three runs scored, three stolen bases and a pair of doubles at the plate and scattering nine hits while striking out three on the mound.
