SOFTBALL DROPS TWINBILL TO BOWDOIN

BRUNSWICK, Maine — Playing for the first time in nearly two weeks, the Bates College softball team opened a stretch of eight games in four days by dropping a tight double-header to CBB rivals Bowdoin in Brunswick, 6-2 in the opener and 4-2 in the second game.

In the first game, Polar Bear first-year Erin Hanley (Foxboro, Mass.) struck out seven of the first nine batters she faced as Bowdoin (12-4, 4-0 NESCAC) built a 6-0 lead. Five different Bowdoin players delivered RBI singles. In the top of the seventh, Bates (7-13, 0-4) touched up Hanley (5-1) for two runs as Laura Lent (Clinton, Mass.) connected for an RBI double before she was knocked in by Anna Wulffleff (Wilton, Conn.). Hanley struck out her 10th batter to end the game and preserve the 6-2 victory. Ginger Walsh (Hopkinton, N.H.) took the loss (2-7) for the Bobcats.

In the nightcap, Liz Swedock (Darien, Conn.) delivered a two-run home run in the second inning to give the Polar Bears a 2-0 lead, but Bates rallied to tie the game in the top of the third on an RBI single by Wulffleff. Back-to-back singles by Jessie Mayol (Westbrook, Maine) and Swedock gave Bowdoin back the two-run lead at 4-2 and Jessie Poulin (Hampden, Maine) allowed just one single in the final four innings to pick up the win and even her record at 2-2. Krissie Whiting (Contoocook, N.H.) took the loss for Bates to fall to 4-4.
