BOBCATS CLOSE OUT REGULAR SEASON WITH
SWEEP OF BABSON, 3-1 & 8-6

WELLESLEY, Mass. (Taken from a Babson College press release)— Bates College scored two unearned runs in the top of the eighth inning off Babson College starter Colleen Kelly (Limerick, Penn.) to claim a dramatic 3-1 victory in the first game of a collegiate doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon. The Bobcats (18-13) then won game two, 8-6, to finish off the sweep.

Babson (18-17) scored its only run of game one in the bottom of the first, as junior co-captain Michelle Malone (Trumbull, Conn.) tripled to lead off the inning. Sophomore Jessica Barry (Wells, Maine) followed with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Malone and giving the Beavers a 1-0 lead. Bates tied the game in the fourth inning, as junior Sarah Huffman (Ipswich, Mass.) doubled, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a sac fly by first-year Cami Dyson (Arvada, Colo.) to even the contest at 1-1. That would be all Kelly and Bates starter Ginger Walsh (Hopkinton, N.H.) would allow through seven, as both pitched out of tough jams to keep their teams in the game. Kelly stranded runners in scoring position in both the fourth and the seventh, while Walsh escaped a second-and-third, one-out jam in the third. The Bobcats eventually took the lead in the eighth, as Babson committed back-to-back errors that allowed a pair of runs to score. Walsh then finished off a brilliant pitching performance with a perfect bottom half of the inning to clinch the 3-1 victory.

Bates took control early in game two, scoring seven runs on six hits and four more Babson errors in the top of the first inning. Babson would fight back with one run in the first, two in the fifth, and three more in the seventh, but Bates would eventually hold on for the 10-4 victory. Sophomore Krissie Whiting (Contoocook, N.H.) was the top performer for the Bobcats, recording two hits and two RBIs at the plate and pitching a complete game for her tenth win of the season on the mound.
