BATES SOFTBALL SWEEPS THOMAS
Bobcats Take One Squeaker, One Blowout

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College softball team swept its second straight doubleheader, taking two games from Thomas College, 3-2 and 14-1.

Bates took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one when senior captain Katy Marshall (Contoocook, N.H.) walked with one out, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on an error. Thomas answered in the top of the second, scoring a pair of unearned runs on misplayed fly balls to the outfield. The Terriers kept the lead until the bottom of the fifth inning. With the bases loaded and two away, Marshall fouled off a pair of 1-2 pitches before coaxing a walk to tie the game. First-year 2B Teresa Janisch (Marina, Calif.) followed with the winning RBI single on the very next pitch. Rookie pitcher Ginger Walsh (Hopkinton, N.H.) worked out of trouble in the sixth and seventh inning, stranding a pair of runners to secure the win. Walsh gave up just four hits and no earned runs in seven innings of work, striking out four and walking three. Thomas hurler Charity Labelle (Biddeford, Maine) was impressive in the loss, allowing just three Bates hits and striking out eight in six innings.

The nightcap of the doubleheader was never in doubt, as the first nine Bobcat batters reached base safely and scored runs. Sophomore C Kim Bosse (Auburn, Maine) had a fine game, going three-for-three with three runs scored and two RBI. Sophomore SS Whitney Hamill (Watertown, Conn.) also had three hits in the contest. Bates pitchers Jen Crawford (Southboro, Mass.), Jen Tjepkema (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Krissie Whiting (Contoocook, N.H.) combined for the four-hitter.
