SOFTBALL ENDS REGULAR SEASON DROPPING TWO AT ST. JOE'S

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College softball team (14-10) ended the 2000 regular season with the second-most wins in school history, but the Bobcats dropped both ends of a well-played doubleheader against the St. Joseph's College Monks (19-16).

In game one, the Bobcats managed just four hits over the first six innings, two each by rookie catcher Brooke Tardiff (Wells, Maine) and senior CF Shannon Browher (Laconia, N.H.). Bates starter Ginger Walsh (Hopkinton, N.H.) allowed just four hits in 5.1 innings, but the Monks were able to convert a couple of walks in the sixth into runs. Bates got on the board in the top of the seventh as sophomore PH Kim Bosse (Auburn, Maine) led off with a pinch single. Pinch runner Anna Wulfleff (Wilton, Conn.) scored two batters later on a single by senior RF Katy Marshall (Contoocook, N.H.) , but the Bobcats could not add any further scoring.

Bates got off quickly in game two, as Tardiff led off the game with a hit and scored three batters later on a sacrifice fly by junior 3B Laura Lent (Clinton, Mass.). The Bobcats were unable to add to the lead, and St. Joe's scored two runs in the second and three in the third off Krissie Whiting (Contoocook, N.H.), who suffered her second loss of the season against five wins.
