BATES SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER WITH PLYMOUTH STATE
Walsh Hardluck Loser in Game 1; Five-Run Sixth Keys Nightcap

(Taken from a Plymouth State press release)

PLYMOUTH, N.H. -- Junior Steph Ruel (Biddeford, Maine) singled with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning today to give the host Plymouth State College Panthers (8-8) a 2-1 victory over Bates College (2-4) in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader.

The Bobcats rebounded with a five-run sixth inning in the nightcap to post a 6-3 come-from-behind win and gain a split of the twinbill.

PSC scored first in the fourth inning of the opener on senior Sarah Wormwood's (Rutland, Vt.) third home run of the season. The Bobcats evened the game in the fifth on an RBI single by first-year catcher Brooke Tardiff (Wells, Maine), which set up Ruel's heroics. Senior Jen Moulton (Bow, N.H.) went the distance for the Panthers for the victory, improving her to 4-2 on the season. First-year hurler Ginger Walsh (Hopkinton, N.H.) took the loss, dropping to 0-3. Walsh's three losses this season are by a combined four runs.

The Panthers held a 2-1 lead headed into the sixth inning of game two thanks to a pair of RBI singles by first-year Sarah Morin (Litchfield, N.H.). The Bobcats scored five times on six hits against PSC relievers Lyndsey Patten (Ellsworth, Maine) and Moulton in the sixth inning. Sophomore catcher Kim Bosse (Auburn, Maine), Tardiff, sophomore SS Whitney Hamill (Watertown, Conn.) and first-year 1B Carla Flaherty (Gorham, Maine) each picked up RBI singles in the inning. The win gave first-year hurler Krissie Whiting (Contoocook, N.H.) her first collegiate win.
