LATE RUN PUSHES BATES PAST MIDDLEBURY ON SOGGY MARCOTTE FIELD

LEWISTON, Maine -- In a contest that ended in pouring rain, the Bates College softball team (10-5, 2-3 NESCAC) pushed the winning run across the plate in bottom of the sixth inning to defeat the Middlebury College Panthers (4-15-2, 0-6 NESCAC).

With one out in the decisive inning, Bates senior CF Shannon Browher (Laconia, N.H.) singled. One out later, she stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. The brought up junior 3B Laura Lent (Clinton, Mass.), who chopped a ball in front of the plate along the first base line. Lent reached safely and Browher scored as Middlebury left first base uncovered.

Bates first-year pitcher Krissie Whiting (Contoocook, N.H.) was the beneficiary of the late run. Whiting improved to 3-1 on the season with her first career shutout, allowing five hits and no runs while striking out two and walking three. Middlebury's Andrea Russo (Abington, Mass.) was the hard luck loser, falling to 1-9 on the season.

The doubleheader between these two teams scheduled for Saturday, April 22, seems doubtful to be played.
