Game 1: Bates 8, Husson 7 BATES SOFTBALL EXTENDS WINNING STREAK TO SEVEN WITH SWEEP OF HUSSON WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Bates College softball team won its seventh straight game today, taking a pair from the host Husson College Braves here today. The Bobcats (8-4) had a squeaker in the opener behind rookie pitcher Ginger Walsh (Hopkinton, N.H.). After the Bobcats jumped out to a 7-0 lead after three-and-a-half innings, Husson (3-15) scored one run in the bottom of the fifth. First-year standout Teresa Janisch (Marina, Calif.) knocked in one of her two RBI in the sixth inning to put Bates up, 8-1. The run proved to be important as Bates allowed six unearned runs in the bottom of that inning before first-year pitcher Jen Tjepkema (Virginia Beach, Va.) shut the door for her first collegiate save by getting the final four outs. Walsh evened her record to 3-3 on the season, with five of the six decisions by one or two runs. For the third straight day, Bates' second game was not in doubt. The Bobcats ended the game early with an 11-1 victory. Junior OF Anna Wulffleff (Wilton, Conn.) led the Bobcats with a pair of hits and four RBI. Janisch, senior co-captain Shannon Browher (Laconia, N.H.) and rookie 1B Carla Flaherty (Gorham, Maine) combined to score seven of Bates' 11 runs. Junior pitcher Jen Crawford (Southboro, Mass.) improved to 4-0 with the victory.
