BOBCATS GAIN SPLIT AT BRANDEIS

WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Bates College softball team (1-3) bounced back from a tight loss in the first game of a doubleheader to post a 12-0 win in game two at Brandeis University.

The Bobcats suffered a big blow early in the first game, as CF Katy Marshall (Contoocook, N.H.), one of two seniors on the team, suffered an injury while stealing a base. The Judges took the lead with a run on the bottom of the second inning, but Bates answered in the top of the fourth on the first career home run by first-year 2B Teresa Janisch (Marina, Calif.). Junior SS Laura Lent (Clinton, Mass.) scored an unearned run in the top of the sixth to give Bates a 2-1 advantage, but Brandeis strung together three of their four hits on the afternoon in the bottom of the inning, including a home run to give them the final 4-2 margin of victory. First-year pitcher Ginger Walsh (Hopkinton, N.H.) was the hard-luck loser for the second time in as many days.

In the second game, Bates took advantage of seven Brandeis errors to score nine unearned runs as the Bobcats romped, 12-0, in a shortened contest. Ten differend Bobcats scored runs, with only sophomore SS Whitney Hamill (Watertown, Conn.) and rookie 1B Carla Flaherty (Gorham, Maine) crossing the plate twice. Janisch went 3-3 in the nightcap, finishing up the weekend with 10 hits in 15 at bats and five RBI. In her first start of the season, junior hurler Jen Crawford (Southboro, Mass.) dominated on the mound, allowing just one hit and one walk in five innings of work for her third career shutout.
