HASTINGS CAPTURES SIXTH CAREER ALL-AMERICA HONOR

LEWISTON, Maine — Bates College junior diver Andrew Hastings of Weston, Mass., placed 13th in the 3-meter diving event at the at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving championships in Buffalo, N.Y., on March 17, earning his sixth career All-America honor and making him the most decorated student-athlete in school history.

Andrew Hastings '02Hastings scored 356.45 points in the preliminary round of the event. Though he failed to reach the finals at the NCAAs for the first time in the six events he has competed in at the national championships, Hastings earned four team points for the Bobcats, qualifying him for the All-America recognition. Hastings' 18 points placed the Bobcats in a three-way tie for 34th place in the team standings, fifth among New England schools.

In the one-meter event on Thursday, Hastings finished in fifth place to earn his fifth career All-America honor. Hastings, who placed fifth in the one-meter event a year ago and fourth in 1999, stood in seventh place after scoring 393.25 points in the preliminary round. He improved to fourth place with a score of 168.15 in the semifals before claiming fifth place overall with his 414.60 points in the finals.

With his six All-America honors, Hastings surpasses three five-time All-Americans in Bates history: Lucas Adams '00, John Fitzgerald '87 and Matt Twiest '00, all track and field. He is also the first Bates swimmer or diver to be honored in three consecutive years.
