FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE BATES WOMEN'S TRACK ESTABLISHES THREE NEW SCHOOL RECORDS LEWISTON, Maine - First-year jumper Aisha Bell of St. Louis, Mo., and senior throwers Erika Bristol of Pittsfield, Mass., and Jennifer Winslow of Lee, N.H., and each established new Bates College track and field record with their outstanding performances at a recent April 15 meet at Colby College. Bell placed third in the triple jump at Colby with a leap of 35 feet, 7 1/4 inches. The jump surpassed that of Anne Millham (Bates Class of 1989) in 1986 by an inch and a quarter. The record had been the oldest standing outdoor field event mark at Bates. Bell qualified for the New England and ECAC Division III championships with the leap. She also placed sixth in the long jump at the event. Bristol, the New England and ECAC champion and an NCAA Championship participant in the 20-pound weight throw in the winter season, established a school record in the shot put with a heave of 36 feet, nine inches, breaking the record, previously set in 1990 by Lynn Barker (Bates Class of 1992), by more than a foot. Bristol, who also holds the indoor record of 36-2 1/4, placed fourth in the meet at Colby. With her record-setting performance, she qualified for the New England and ECAC Division III outdoor track and field championships. Winslow broke her own record in the discus by two and a half
feet with a toss of 114 feet, one inch, taking sixth place. Winslow also
placed fourth in the hammer throw with a toss of 144-7. She is qualified
for the New England and ECAC championships in the discus, while also meeting
the stadards for the New England All-Division championships in the hammer
throw. Winslow is an All New England performer in the 20-pound weight throw.
Bristol is a 1995 graduate of Mount Greylock Regional High School. She is the daughter of Roger and Susan Bristol, Pittsfield. Winslow is a 1996 graduate of Oyster River High School.
