JOHNSON, ZWICK NAMED BATES ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
LEWISTON, Maine -- Senior Denby Johnson of Chanhassen,
Minn., a swimmer on the women's swim team, and first-year Erik
Zwick of Virginia Beach, Va., a sprinter on the men's indoor
track team, have been named Bates College Athletes of the Week for the
week ending Feb 8.
Johnson, a senior co-captain of the swim team, is having the
finest season of her career at Bates. Coach Dana Mulholland's Bobcats
dominated a triangular meet Feb. 7 with Trinity (Conn.) College and
Connecticut College, defeating their opponents by scores of 87-53 and
106-34, respectively. Johnson won four different events, highlighted by a
Bates record in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Her time of 18:01.60 was seven
seconds faster than the previous school record, set in 1994. The record
was Johnson's third of the season in a freestyle, along with new marks in
the 1,000 (10:45.32, Jan. 25 vs. Colby) and the 200 (1:57.03, Jan. 31 vs.
Tufts). Her times in the 1,650 and 200 also qualified Johnson for the NCAA
Division III Championship meet, held March 12-14 in St. Louis. Also at
this weekend's triangualar meet, Johnson won the 100-yard butterfly
(1:02.08) and the 100-yard freestyle (55.09), and she anchored the
400-yard freestyle relay.
Zwick had a fine day for coach Al Fereshetian's men's track team,
scoring 19 points in the team's second place finish in a quadrangular
meet. His finest performance came in the 200-meter dash, when he picked up
his first win at the collegiate level, establishing a school record with a
time of 22.91. The record had stood since 1994. Zwick also placed third in
the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 1/2 inch and fifth in the 55-meter
dash with a time of 6.97.
