OSBORNE, TWIEST NAMED BATES ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

LEWISTON, Maine -- Junior Kate Osborne of Sandy Hook, Conn., a thrower on the women's indoor track team, and sophomore Matt Twiest of Albuquerque, N.M., a distance runner on the men's indoor track team, have been named Bates College Athletes of the Week for the week ending Feb 1.

Osborne was the lone first-place finisher for the coach Carolyn Court's squad at an eight-team meet held at Bowdoin College on Jan. 31. She won the 20-pound weight throw with a throw of 38 feet, 10 1/4 inches, qualifying her for the New England Division III and ECAC championships. Bates placed in four of the top eight positions in the weight throw, accounting for 22 of their 58 points in the meet. Osborne, a junior co-captain, had earlier qualified for the New England Division III championships in the pentathlon with a score of 2073 points.

Twiest won two events for the Bobcats at a quadrangular meet Jan. 31. He won the 1500-meter run by nearly five seconds with a time of 4:02.81. Twiest also won the 800-meter run with a time of 1:59.0, a three-second margin of victory. Coach Al Fereshetian's team won the meet with 214 points, defeating Tufts (199), Bowdoin (138) and Rhode Island College (2). Bates improved its record to 12-1 this season with the win. Twiest already had achieved one All-America honor this academic year, finishing ninth at the NCAA Division III cross country championships in the fall.

Osborne is a 1995 graduate of Newtown High School. She is the daughter of Michael and Deborah Osborne. Twiest is a 1996 graduate of Albuquerque Academy.
