MCLAUGHLIN, KING HONORED FOR HOOPS PERFORMANCES
 

LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College first-year forward Kate McLaughlin of Laconia, N.H., and sophomore forward Emily King of Lebanon, N.H., have been honored by the Maine Women's Basketball Coaches Association (MWBCA) and the Eastern College Athletic Association (ECAC) for their performances the week of Jan. 25.

McLaughlin was named MWBCA Rookie of the Week, the second Bates player in as many weeks to win the honor. McLaughlin shot 50 percent from the field (22 for 44), averaging 17.3 points, 8.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 3.0 steals per game as the Bobcats won two out of three games. In the Bobcats' 87-53 win over New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) foe Tufts University, McLaughlin tied her career-high with 23 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. She also had four assists and four steals. Bates lost its next game at the University of Southern Maine, 91 60, but rebounded to defeat Babson College, 84-67. Against Babson, McLaughlin was one of three Bates starters to score 20 points. She also had a career high 6 assists. For the season, McLaughlin leads the team with 8.2 rebounds per game, sixth in the NESCAC. She is third on the team in scoring with 13.2 points per game.

King was named to the ECAC Weekly Honor Roll. The team's leading scorer, she averaged 19.3 points and 6.7 rebounds in three games this week. King scored 20 points against both Tufts and Babson. At Southern Maine, King recorded a double double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Her 17.2 points per game this season ranks third in the NESCAC and sixth in Maine.

In the most recent polls, Bates, at 11-2, was ranked second by the MWBCA and third by the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA). Under coach Jim Murphy, the Bobcats are 31-6 in the regular season over the past two seasons. Four starters average double figures in scoring and more than seven rebounds per game.

McLaughlin is a 1997 graduate of Laconia High School. King is a 1996 graduate of Lebanon High School.
