O'MALLEY NAMED TO SECOND STRAIGHT ALL-AMERICA SQUAD
LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College sophomore
Kate O'Malley of Deephaven, Minn., has been named to the
1997 National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Umbro women's soccer
Division III All-America team for the second straight season.
O'Malley is the third student-athlete in Bates history to earn
consecutive All-America honors in a team sport, joining Chris Hickey '88
(football, 1986 and 1987) and Martha MacDougal '95 (women's lacrosse, 1994
and 1995). Named a third-team All-American, O'Malley was one of seven
players to be named to the team for a second straight year, and the only
sophomore.
O'Malley, a forward, was the Bobcats' top scorer for the second
year in a row. She scored nine goals and four assists for 22 points this
season and ranks fourth on the Bates' all-time scoring list with 27 goals
and 11 assists for 65 points. O'Malley had a pair of multiple goal games
this season, bringing her career total to seven. She holds the school
single-season records for goals (18) and points (43). "Our opponents
constantly shadowed and double teamed Kate this year," Bates head coach
Jim Murphy said. "And she still managed to lead our team in scoring and
get some big goals."
Bates finished its regular season with a 9-5 record, earning a
second straight berth in the NCAA Division III women's soccer tournament.
They hosted a first-round game, losing, 1-0, in two overtimes to in-state
foe Colby College.
