O'MALLEY, McCRAVE NAMED TO ALL-NEW ENGLAND WOMEN'S SOCCER TEAM
BOSTON, Mass. -- Sophomore forward Kate O'Malley of
Deephaven, Minn., and junior forward Colleen McCrave of
Walpole, Mass., have been named to the 1997 National Soccer Coaches
Association of America/Umbro All-New England team for the second straight
season.
O'Malley, the Bobcats' top scorer for the second year in a row,
returns as an All-New England first-team selection. She scored nine goals
and four assists for 22 points this season and ranks fourth on the Bates'
all-time scoring list with 27 goals and 11 assists for 65 points.
O'Malley had a pair of multiple goal games this season, bringing her
career total to seven. She holds the school single-season records for
goals (18) and points (43) "Our opponents constantly shadowed and
double-teamed Kate this year," Bates head coach Jim Murphy said. "And she
still managed to lead our team in scoring and get some big goals."
McCrave, an All-New England first-team selection a year ago, is
one the second team this year. McCrave is the team's top playmaker,
scoring four goals and six assists for 14 points. She is eight on Bates'
all-time scoring list with 15 goals and 16 assists for 46 points. Her 16
assists are fourth all-time at Bates. "Colleen is one of the most gutsy
athletes I've ever seen," Murphy said. "She was injured for part of the
season, but never missed a game and was still good enough to earn this
honor."
Bates finished its regular season with a 9-5 record, earning a
second straight berth in the NCAA Division III women's soccer tournament.
They hosted a first-round game, losing, 1-0, in two overtimes to in-state
foe Colby College.
O'Malley is a 1996 graduate of Minnetonka High School. McCrave is
a 1995 graduate of Walpole High School.
