BATES' McMAHON, SCHALL EARN REGIONAL FIELD HOCKEY KUDOS
LEWISTON, Maine -- Junior halfback/midfielder Molly McMahon
of Cumberland, Maine, and junior forward Amanda Schall of
Chevy Chase, Md., have been named New England East Regional
All-Americans by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA).
McMahon was one of the Bobcats' top players in the middle of the
field this season. She scored one goal and had four assists for six
points, but her strength was her defensive play. McMahon, a captain of
next season's squad, was routinely called on to mark the opponents' top
scorer and to break up opponents' penalty corners. "Molly is the glue
which holds this team together," Bates head coach Stacey Watts said. "She
is a tremendous leader who everyone on the team looks towards."
Schall, who is also McMahon's roommate, was the team's leading
scorer this season with eight goals and four assists for 20 points. All of
her goals and one assist came in the second half of the season after she
was switched from left to right wing. Included among Schall's goals was an
overtime game winner against the University of Maine at Farmington and the
only goal in a 1 0 victory over in-state rival Colby College. She also
scored a career-high four goals in a win over New England College. "Amanda
had a terrific second half of the season," Watts said. "She really stepped
up her play."
The Bobcats finished this season with an 8-6 record, their second
over .500 finish in Watts' three seasons as head coach. Three of their six
losses came at the hands of teams which qualified for the NCAA Division
III tournament, while they had wins over Tufts University, whom they had
not beaten since 1994, and Division II Stonehill College.
McMahon is a 1995 graduate of North Yarmouth Academy. Schall is a
1995 graduate of the Madeira School.
