BATES' HAGSTROM NAMED MAINE VOLLEYBALL ROOKIE OF THE
YEAR
LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College first-year setter Kate
Hagstrom of Portola, Calif., has been named Maine Volleyball
Rookie of the Year.
Along with sophomore hitter Amanda Colby of Willimantic,
Conn., Hagstrom was named a first-team selection to the All-Tournament
team at the State of Maine Championships held Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 at Colby
College in Waterville. Both were also named to the All-State team. All
selections were made by the coaches of the state's 11 teams.
In 11 games over three matches at the state championships,
Hagstrom had 79 assists, averaging just over seven per game. She also led
the team with eight aces and had 12 kills and two errors in 29 chances for
a .344 hitting percentage.
Colby led the team with 35 kills in nine games, for just under
four per game. Colby was also second on the team with 12 digs at the state
championships.
Bates finished the tournament in second place. The Bobcats won
their first two matches, defeating the University of Southern Maine and
the University of New England in three games each. In the finals, the
Bobcats lost a tight five-game match to Colby College, 9-15, 15-7, 4-15,
15-4, 10-15. Bates' record stands at 16-19 overall this season headed into
the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championships
this weekend.
Hagstrom is a 1997 graduate of Portola High School. Colby is a 1996
graduate of Windham (Conn.) High School.
