WALPOLE GRADS HONORED FOR FOOTBALL PERFORMANCES
LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College first-year defensive back Pat
Collins and sophomore linebacker Frost Hubbard of Walpole,
Mass., were honored this weekend by the Eastern College Athletic
Conference (ECAC) for their performances in the Bobcats' 22-21 win over
in-state rival Colby College in Waterville.
Collins was named ECAC New England Division III Rookie of the
Week. He had seven tackles (two solo) and broke up one pass. On Colby's
final drive of the game, he recorded a five-yard sack and blocked one of
the White Mules' two game winning field goal attempts.
Hubbard was named to the ECAC Weekly Honor Roll. He had 12 tackles
(four solo), including a two-yard sack and another tackle for a loss. The
Bobcats' leading tackler this season with 83, Hubbard also caught pass on
a fake punt on fourth down and 18, which led to Bates' second touchdown
two plays later.
Bates' 22-21 victory snapped the Bobcats' 14-game losing streak.
It was their first win over Colby since 1987, and their first road win
since 1990. The game marked the 100th meeting between the two teams.
The Bobcats host the 100th meeting with their other chief rival,
the Bowdoin College Polar Bears, this Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
"The win felt great," Bates head coach Rick Pardy said after the
game on Saturday. "But we don't plan on it being our last this year. We
can enjoy it now, but we have to prepare for a talented Bowdoin team next
week."
Hubbard and Collins, along with first-year linebacker Bob
Rosenthal, who was last week's New England Small College Athletic
Conference (NESCAC) Defensive Co-Player of the Week, were teammates on the
1996 Massachusetts State Division II B Super Bowl champions at Walpole
High School. Collins spent a year at the Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor,
Conn., while Rosenthal played one year at Blair Academy in New Jersey.
