FREEMAN, MYRICK, SWEEP STATE OF MAINE CROSS COUNTRY
MEETS
LEWISTON, Maine -- Senior Justin Freeman of Andover, N.H., and junior Adelia Myrick of Kodiak, Alaska, winners of the 1997 men's and women's State of Maine Cross Country Championships, have been named Bates College Male and Female Athletes of the Week.
Freeman, a
four-time All-State
runner, won the State of
Maine
championship on his home course, Springbrook Golf Club in Leeds on
Saturday,
Oct. 11. His time of 25:16 in the five-mile race smashed the previous
course
record by 32 seconds. The record, held by John Fitzgerald '87, had stood
for 11 years. Freeman was one of four Bobcats to finish in the top 10,
as Bates won its second straight team title, 31 to 33 over Bowdoin
College.
Freeman is a 1995 graduate of St. Bani High
School
Myrick, who finished the
5K race in 19:06, picked up her
first win of the season to go with a second-place finish and two
third-place
finishes. She also became the first Bates woman ever to win the State of
Maine title. The Bobcats, one of four teams ranked in New England, placed
second, nine points behind the University of Southern Maine, 43 to 52.
The Bobcats defeated CBB and NESCAC rivals Colby (62 points) and Bowdoin
(86 points.). Myrick earned her third straight All-Maine honor.
Myrick is a 1995 graduate of Kodiak High School.
