RICHARDS NAMED NESCAC SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Richards had several key hits in the Bobcats' 3-1 week. She was 5-12 with two doubles and eight RBI. In a 4-3 win April 21 over Bowdoin College that avenged an earlier doubleheader sweep, Richards drove in the Bobcats' first run of the game with a single and gave them a 3-2 lead in the third inning with an RBI ground ball.
On April 23, Bates defeated the University of Southern Maine for the first time since 1994 with a 6-4 victory. Richards went 2-3 with three RBI. She knocked in one run in the first inning to give Bates a 1-0 lead and tied the game 3-3 with a two-out, two-run double in the third inning. With the Bobcats trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth, Richards' sharp grounder back to the mound was thrown away, allowing the winning runs to score, extending the Bobcats' home winning streak to six games.
Richards was held hitless in a 9-1 loss in the first game of an April 26 twin bill against Brandeis University, but she came back in the second game to go 2-3 with a bases-loaded double for three RBI. She also had a stolen base as Bates won the nightcap, 10-0.
The Bobcats were 7-6 at the end of the week, matching last season's win total with nine games remaining. Richards leads the team with 14 RBI. She is second in slugging percantage at .400 and tied for third with a .314 batting average (11-35), up from .261.
Richards is a 1994 graduate of Mt. Abram High School.
