SEVEN BATES TRACK AND FIELD ATHLETES NAMED ALL-NEW ENGLAND
Shapiro qualifies for his first NCAA Championships


  LEWISTON, Maine -- Seven Bates College track and field athletes recently earned All New England honors by scoring points for their team at the Division III New England championships.

For the men, junior Aron Shapiro of Lexington, Mass., had the Bobcats' top performance at the men's meet May 8-10 at Middlebury College. Shapiro placed third in the javelin throw with a throw of 190 feet, four inches. Shapiro exceeded the provisional mark for the NCAA Division III national championships by nearly two feet, placing him among the top 14 in the nation. The national championships will be held May 21-24 at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn. It will be Shapiro's first trip to nationals.

Sophomore Kevin Stroman of New York, N.Y., placed third in the triple jump with a leap of 44 feet, seven and one-half inches. Stroman hadalready qualified for the NCAA championships in the triple jump. He won the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) title in the event two weeks earlier.

First-year sprinter Erik Zwick of Virginia Beach, Va., placed third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.09 seconds after posting the second-fastest time in the trials. Zwick is the Bates record holder in the indoor 200. He placed third at the NESCAC championships.

Sophomore Peter Beeson of Novelty, Ohio, placed fifth in the pole vault with a vault of 12 feet, nine inches. Beeson was the New England Division III pole vault champion at the indoor championships in February. This was his first All-New England performance outdoors.

Sophomore Adam Thompson of South Portland, Maine, placed sixth in the decathlon with a score of 5,157 points, earning his first All-New England honor.

As a team, the Bobcats finished 11th of 26 teams at the championships with 21 points.

Two Bates women earned All-New England honors May 1-2 at Connecticut College in New London, Conn. Senior Abby Phelps of Chester, N.H., placed sixth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:36.15. Phelps qualified for the NCAA championships in the 1,500-meter run at the NESCAC championships.

Classmate Erika Cohen of Sharon, Mass., finished sixth in the 10,000 meter run in 42:55.61. It was Cohen's first All-New England honor.
