STROMAN, TWIEST WIN NESCAC TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS
Phelps
also qualifies for nationals
Stroman defended his NESCAC title in the triple jump with a career best leap of 46 feet, six and one-half inches. He established a Hamilton facility record with the leap, breaking a record which had stood since 1991.
Twiest won his first NESCAC title in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:22.5. He also established a facility record, eclipsing a mark set in 1989. The NESCAC championships were just the first time Twiest had run the steeplechase.
Stroman and Twiest, along with women's track captain Abigail Phelps of Chester, N.H., who placed second in the 10,000-meter run with a personal-best time of 38:07.45, qualified for the NCAA Division III outdoor track and field championships May 21-24 at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn. It will be the first trip for all three athletes to the outdoor championships. Twiest and Stroman both went to the 1998 indoor track and field championships, while Phelps has gone to nationals in cross country the past three years. Twiest has already named All-American in cross country and in the indoor 1,500-meter run this year.
