NCAA DIVISION III TRACK AND FIELD RESULTS
Men Finish Best-Ever 15th; Five Named All-Americans
NAPERVILLE, Ill. Ð The Bates College men's track and field team placed
15th out of 77 teams that scored points at the
NCAA Division III outdoor
track and field championships, held May 25-27 at North Central College in
Naperville, Ill. The Bates women finished in a tie for
58th place out of
76 teams that scored points.
The men's 15th-place finish was the highest in school history at the
outdoor championships, as were their 14 points scored. The Bobcats'
previous best was 20th place with 13 points in 1987. The women's finish
was Bates' best since 1996, when they finished 37th.
In the only action of the day on Saturday for the Bobcats, senior Mike
Danahy of So. Windsor, Conn. placed 11th in the
5,000-meters,
missing out on his fifth career All-America honor.
The Bobcats had two runners competing in Friday's 3000-meter
steeplechase.
Senior Matt Twiest of Albuquerque, N.M., earned Bates'
highest finish of
the meet, placing fourth with a time of 9:03.64. First-year
runner Justin Easter of Jay, Maine, placed seventh in
9:05.76. They were
the only New England runners to earn All-America honors in the
steeplechase. The two earned seven points for the Bobcats, moving them
into seventh place of 41 teams with 14 points at the end of two days of
competition.
For Twiest, the All-America award was his first earned during the outdoor
track and field season and the fifth overall of his career. He is tied
with classmate Lucas Adams of Nottingham, N.H., and John
Fitzgerald (Bates
Class of '87) for most career All-America honors at Bates. This is
Easter's first All-America award, though he has participated in three NCAA
Championships so far in his young career, reaching the NCAA cross country
and Nordic skiing championships earlier this year. Easter was the only
first-year runner in the entire race.
Bates junior Erik Zwick of Virginia Beach, Va., competed in
the trials of
the 400-meter dash on Friday, but failed to qualify
for the finals,
placing fifth in his heat with a time of 48.62 seconds.
Three Bates College athletes earned All-America honors on the first day of
competition.
First-year distance runner Abigail Anthony of Jamestown,
R.I., the
Bobcats' lone female performer at the meet, earned her first career
All-America honor in the 10,000-meter run. Ranked
12th in the event
entering the meet, Anthony finished sixth with a time of 37:28.58, two
seconds off her school-record time. She was the first rookie to cross the
finish line and the second runner from New England. Anthony is the first
female Bates runner
to earn All-America honors during the outdoor season since 1992. Bates
ended the first day of competition tied for 20th place with three points.
"Abby's performance was impressive in her first national
championship," said Bates women's coach Carolyn Court. "She was
composed and ran a very intellegent race. She made
some great decisions early in the race and responded to the
competition. Ranked ninth going into the meet, Abby moved in to
seventh with two laps remaining and out-kicked an opponent in the final
lap for the sixth place finish."
For the men, senior Lucas Adams of Nottingham, N.H., earned
fifth
place in the hammer throw after entering the meet
seeded ninth. His throw
of 184 feet, one inch, was his best of the season by two feet. The
All-America honor is the second of Adams' career in the hammer and his
fifth overall, tying him with John Fitzgerald (Class of 1987) for most
individual honors won at Bates. Adams placed fourth in the hammer a year
ago.
In the men's 10,000 meter run, senior Mike
Danahy of So.
Windsor, Conn.,
took sixth place in 30:46.87 for his fourth career All-America honor and
second in the 10,000. Danahy is the Open New England champion in the
10,000 meters. He entered the NCAA Championships ranked ninth in the
nation. The Bobcats ended Day One in a tie for ninth place with
seven points.
