FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE COULSON, SANDLER NAMED BATES ATHLETES OF THE WEEK LEWISTON, Maine Ð Sophomore lacrosse players Liz Coulson of Devon, Pa., and Jack Sandler of Hicksville, N.Y., have earned Bates Athlete of the Week honors for the week ending March 26, the first honorees for spring 2000. Coulson, an attack on the women's lacrosse team, was the Bobcats' leading scorer in their season-opening win over Bridgewater State College March 25. She tallied four goals and two assists for six points. The Bobcats dominated the match from the beginning, jumping out to an 8-3 lead in the first half before cruising to a 15-7 victory. Coulson was tied for second on the team with 18 goals 1999. She placed third on the squad with 24 points. Sandler, also an attack, led the men's lacrosse team to a 2-0 week with victories over Wentworth Institute of Technology and the United States Merchant Marine Academy (Kings Point). Against Wentworth March 22, Sandler recorded seven goals in Bates' 17-8 victory. The seven-goal outburst matched the third-highest single-game goal total in Bates history. Sandler followed with another seven-point performance, scoring six goals and an assist against Kings Point. The Bobcats triumphed, 11-10, in the contest played March 25 on the campus of MIT. Bates rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the first period to take a 6-5 lead at half-time. The increased the lead to 10-7 in the third before holding on for the one-goal win, their second over Kings Point in as many years. After three games against varsity opponents, Sandler leads the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) with 16 goals. He is third in the league with 18 points. Coulson is a 1998 graduate of the Agnes Irwin School. She is the daughter of Frank and Linda Coulson, Devon, Pa. Sandler is a 1998 graduate of Friends Academy.
