LIVELY, PHELPS, VOELKER SHARE BATES ATHLETE OF THE WEEK HONORS
LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College seniors Jay Lively of North Falmouth, Mass.,Abigail Phelps of Chester, N.H., and Mike Voelker of Coventry, R.I., have been named the initial Bates Athletes of the Week for the spring season.Lively is an attack for the Bates men's lacrosse team. With 10 goals and 15 assists for 25 points, Lively was the leading scorer for the Bobcats in a 2-2 week. On March 30, he set school records for assists (10) and points (13) in a game as the Bobcats defeated the University of New England, 24-2. Against Maine Maritime Academy on April 2, Lively scored eight points on three goals and five assists in a 22-5 win. He scored one goal April 4 against Wesleyan and led the team with three goals against Amherst April 5, in a pair of Bates losses. In the most recent NCAA Division III lacrosse statistics, Lively was ranked fourth in the nation with 3.75 assists per game. With 33 points (10 goals, 23 assists), Lively is fourth in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) in scoring.
Phelps is a member of the women's track and field team. She was one of the team's top scorers at an April 4 meet at Tufts University. The Bobcats finished sixth in an eight-team field that featured two Division II schools and one Division I school. Phelps won the 5,000-meter run with a personal best time of 18:37.51, qualifying her for the ECAC and New England Division III championship meets. Phelps also ran a leg of the Bobcats' 3200-meter relay team that placed second with a time of 10:22.81.
Voelker was named NESCAC Co-Player of the Week for his peformance in a 2-3 week for the baseball team. The Bobcats were 2-1 in games Voelker started. Voelker had a monstrous day in a doubleheader against the University of Maine at Presque Isle. In the first game, he was two for four with a triple, a home run and three RBI. In the second game, Voelker became the third player in Bates College history to hit three home runs in a single game and the first since Chris Hickey '88 did it in 1985. For the entire week, Voelker was six for 10 with nine RBI. He is batting .500 (9-18) overall, tops in the NESCAC, and has compiled a slugging percentage of 1.278. - 30-
