The Bobcats placed third in an eight-team field in the opening meet of the season at Tufts' course in Grafton, Mass. Junior Mike Danahy (So. Windsor, Conn.) won the meet, establishing a course record with a time of 26:52.5. He broke the previous record, held by Juston Freeman '98, by five seconds, and improving his time on the course by 1:10 from the previous year. It was the first collegiate cross country win of Danahy's career. He won the race over several 1997 All-Americans, including teammate Matt Twiest (Albuquerque, N.M.), who placed 12th in 28:14, leading a pack of six Bobcats who finsihed the 8K course just 35 seconds apart. Londonderry, N.H. natives junior Steve Dutton and sophomore Steve Mague placed 16th and 17th. Brandeis (2nd), Tufts (8th) and Cortland State (25th) were each ranked in the top 25 in the nation by the United States Cross Country Coaches Association.
