TWIEST, DANAHY HEADED TO CROSS COUNTRY NATIONALS

Bates College junior Matt Twiest (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Mike Danahy (So. Windsor, Conn.) placed fifth and seventh, respectively, at the New England Division III Championship meet, earning them spots at the NCAA Championships next week at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa.

Twiest, a 1997 All-American, will make his third trip to the NCAA Championships. With a time of 25:11, he improved his standing at the regionals to fifth place from sixth last year. Twiest placed ninth at last year's national championships and was the top first-year runner at nationals two years ago.

Danahy earns his first trip to the nationals after posting his best season at Bates. Danahy won three meets this year, including the State of Maine championship, which Twiest won in 1996. With a time of 25:22, Danahy improved from 35th at last year's regional qualifier to seventh this year. The Bobcats placed eight overall as a team, down three spots from last year's fifth place finish.
