PORTLAND, Maine -- The Bates College men's cross country team won their fourth straight State of Maine championship, narrowly defeated CBB rivals Bowdoin, 35-38, for the crown.

The Bobcats also produced the individual champion for the fourth year in a row, as senior Mike Danahy (So. Windsor, Conn.) became the sixth man and third Bates runner to win back-to-back State titles, finishing 25 seconds ahead of the next competitor. Danahy's classmates Matt Twiest (Albuquerque, N.M.) and John McGrath (Merrimack, N.H.) also earned All-Maine status with their fourth- and fifth-place finishes, respectively. First-year runner Justin Easter (Jay, Maine), competing in his first competition since the opening meet of the season, took 12th place. Senior Brendan Hahesy (Melrose, Mass.) was right behind Easter in 13th, eight seconds and two places ahead of Bowdoin's fifth runner, clinching the meet victory for the Bobcats. Bates' fourth straight team title is one shy of the record, also set by the Bobcats from 1973-77.
