LEEDS, Maine -- In a clash of three of top 25 men's cross country teams in the nation, the No. 21 MIT Engineers narrowly defeated the No. 19 Bates College Bobcats and No. 12 Tufts University Jumbos, 40 to 41 to 43.

The Bobcats produced the race winner in senior tri-captain Mike Danahy (So. Windsor, Conn.), whose time of 26:38 was 26 seconds faster than his next closest competitor. The Bobcats were also able to finish their second and third runners ahead of the competitors, with senior Matt Twiest (Albuquerque, N.M.) taking fourth place in 27:45 and classmate John McGrath (Merrimack, N.H.) finishing saeventh in 28:05. Senior Brendan Hahesy (Melrose, Mass.) took 12th in 28:57 and tricaptain Steve Dutton (Londonderry, N.H.) rounded out the scoring in 18th place with a time of 29:06. MIT was able to defeat the Bobcats thanks a group of four runners who took 13th through 16th place, using their displacement scoring to save three points.

The Bobcats 41-43 advantage over Tufts marks the first time since Al Fereshetian has been head coach that Bates has defeated the Jumbos. The Bobcats travel next week to Williamstown, Mass., to participate in the Williams Invitational.
