GRAFTON, Mass. -- Resting most of their top runners in preparation for next week's NCAA championship qualifying meet, the Bates College men's cross country team had a respectable seventh-place showing at the ECAC championships held at Tufts' course in Grafton, Mass.

First-year runner Justin Easter (Jay, Maine), who has been battling injuries for much of the season, clinched the Bobcats' seventh spot for the regionals, taking 21st at ECACs in a time of 27:35 for the 8K course. Classmate Eric Knackmuhs (Wycoff, N.J.) placed second for the Bobcats with a 36th-place finish and a time of 28:07. Junior Steve Mague (Londonderry, N.H.) and senior Steve Dutton (Londonderry, N.H.), high school teammates, placed within a couple of seconds of each other in 54th and 59th places, while sophomore Ben Bruce (Malvern, Pa.) rounded out Bates' scoring in 76th place.
