Tufts Hayseed Classic BATES MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY TAKES SECOND GRAFTON, Mass. -- For the second straight year, the Bates College men's cross country team opened the season with a second-place at the Tufts University Hayseed Classic. The Bobcats finished just four points behind Division II Bentley College and well ahead of the host Jumbos, who were ranked fifth in the nation in the first national poll of the season. With junior captain and two-time NCAA qualifier Justin Easter (Jay, Maine) sitting out the 8K race, classmate Malcolm Gray (Broxville, N.Y.) led the charge of five Bobcats among the top 12 finishers, including three first-year runners. Gray finished fourth, his top collegiate individual finish, with a time of 28:04. Rookie Robert Gomez (Waldoboro, Maine) finished sixth in his collegiate debut in 28:23. Sophomore John Plimpton (Chicago, Ill.) took eighth in 28:32, while first-years Joel Anderson (New Brighton, Minn.) and Andrius Staisiunas (Panevezys, Lithuania) each broke the 29-minute barrier in their college debuts, placing 10th and 12th, respectively.
